The school has been a Leader in Me school for 5 years, providing students with a 21st century learning experience. During the “Leadership Day” local high school students were shocked by all that the elementary school kids could do on their own such as lead tours, greet guests, act as technology helpers and give presentations.

STURGIS, MI – the Sturgis school district is starting The Leader in Me process with teacher training, which involves teachers volunteering to read Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and getting together each month to discuss one habit. From there, teachers can start incorporating the habits into the classroom. “It’s intrinsic rather than extrinsic,” Principal Nicole Airgood said, based on internal values and character rather than externally modified behavior.

LOGAN, UT – During their second year celebrating Leader Day, Hillcrest Elementary educators agree student behavioral patterns have changed since their facility became a Leader in Me school three years ago. “The kids own their choices. They own their behavior. They’re working together. They’re learning basically life skills. “It’s working,” said Tom Papiernik, refocus specialist at the school. “We’re consistently seeing improvement in their behavior, and it’s very apparent from before we started the program to now.”

One student mentioned that he felt motivated by the principles to help his mom get groceries in the house. Principal Beth Millerschin thinks the children are receptive to the idea because the staff embraced their belief in the children’s abilities, as well as being thoroughly trained in the program.
