Stanton Elementary Leadership Day, 2011

Default Avatar  Admin Account  Jun 02, 2011

A 5th grade student production leader took over 200 pictures of our Leadership Day event and took it upon himself to put it into a video. He brilliantly, without any teacher direction, captured the spirit of the day as students used their strengths as public speakers, greeters, reporters, tour guides, or manned a leadership booth. Enjoy!Matt Miller, PrincipalStanton Elementary, MO

Community Circle

Default Avatar  Admin Account  May 31, 2011

Each week our entire school gathers in the gym for an assembly-like experience.  We have titled this time “Community Circle.”  We sit in a circle around the MI flag, US flag, and a peace pole.  We come together to share how we can carry out the 7 Habits, to create school-wide goals, and to celebrate the leaders within us.  We do this through quotes, movie clips, discussions and turn and talks. ...

The Right People on the Bus

Default Avatar  Admin Account  Apr 22, 2011

GOOD TO GREAT by Jim Collins:  When it comes to getting started, good-to-great leaders understand three simple truths. First, if you begin with “who,” you can more easily adapt to a fast-changing world. If people get on your bus because of where they think it’s going, you'll be in trouble when you get 10 miles down the road and discover that you need to change direction because the world has ch...

Staff Synergy

In just 25 minutes/week we have greatly increased our staff synergy.
  1. First, each person writes the successes they have had in the prior week and posts it on the wall.
  2. Second, “clear the path” items or any topic they would like more information on are posted. This has really helped give direction to our professional development, staff meetings, and committee plans.
  3. Third, they write their goal for ...

As the Leadership Teacher at East Richland Elementary School, I began our Leadership Day by welcoming guests and outlining the agenda for the day.  Our principals, Suzanne Hahn and Dan Cox, then shared our journey of creating a common vision. We were already a good school but our initiatives were “Random Acts of Excellence.”   They were not coordinated and focused. The Leader in Me helped us to...

To Stress or Not To Stress

Default Avatar  Admin Account  Feb 08, 2010

When things feel a bit out of control, my staff and I have found this activity helps.  Perhaps you will too.On post-its, each staff member writes six things that are causing them stress; three from home and three from school. We then walk around the room with the post-its stuck on our arm. Conversations with each other help in realizing which of the stressors are in our Circle of Control. The s...

Parents add a lot to a school: volunteering, enthusiasm, new ideas, and funding. As such an important part of the school, offering training in the 7 Habits would include them in the common language of the school. In addition, the training would benefit the parents, the staff, and the students as they work together toward a common goal: to make the school the best it can be.But how to get a sign...

Staff and committee meetings are a necessity; making decisions on which direction to go propels the school to improve and succeed.
