At Winchester Elementary, after only one year with The Leader in Me process, the impact it has made is evident. Use of Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is stressed each day and school practices have been examined and aligned to ensure that children practice and employ these strategies in all aspects of their school day. These skills are witnessed when students show compas...

In the past, moving a kid out of Reading Intervention didn’t happen often—but this year is different. My veteran teacher is quoted as saying; I have never had kids move out of the program this quickly. The only thing I changed was setting goals with the kids and having them track their strategies every week. Pretty incredible! The second piece of data is also amazing – we read more books last q...

The Kindergartners have been very busy! They integrated the study of Thanksgiving with the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People . They discussed how the Pilgrims were proactive in making the choice to leave England so they could pray the way they wanted. They began with the end in mind when they decided they wanted to make a new life for themselves. They put first things first by building houses...

Recently our staff conducted their official vote for our 21st century proposal to the district. Our proposal is to become a Leader in Me school and getting an official vote is required by the teacher's union. When the votes were tallied, we had a 100% commitment! I was thrilled to have this kind of enthusiasm from the staff. Then we found out that our school is the first in the district to r...

Like some Intermediate students in Grade 7, a boy in our school was starting to shut down, not completing work, and beginning to act out. His teacher tried many different things to help him, without much success. She decided to get him involved in a process to see if he could change and work to his potential. The teacher came to me to see if I would be able to sit and work with them to help cr...

Sammy Squirrel and Sean Covey’s other “happy kids” have given me a great way to support our school’s leadership focus during library. Using The 7 Habits of Happy Kids book, I read Chapter 1: Bored! Bored! Bored! to the first grade classes and we discussed what Be Proactive means. Then we discussed what Be Proactive means in the library. The picture below illustrates some of the answers the stu...

One of our social studies and math objectives for first grade is to expose children to time lines and how they are used. When I heard Stephen Covey speak at Oakland Schools a few weeks ago he said that when he asked a child what he was the leader of, the child responded that he was the leader of his life. To me that was a profound thing for a child to understand and state. My class knows they ar...

During the 2008-2009 school year 91% of our parents attended at least one parent conference. Data notebooks and student-led conferences played a big role in achieving that number. These two strategies empower students to take ownership of their own learning. Tracking progress in their data notebooks and knowing they will personally share the progress with their parents has been a big motivator ...

One way our second grade teachers keep parents involved in The Leader in Me process is through a Community Notebook. Each Friday, students write how they have used the habits in their daily activities to work toward their goals for the week. Over the weekend, students share the notebook with their parents. This encourages parents to look at their own lives and see how they can also use the habi...

Sow a thought, reap an action. Sow an action, reap a habit. Sow a habit, reap a character. Sow a character, reap a destiny. This familiar verse begs the question: Where do the thoughts originate? How do we sow a thought in the heads of students? One significant way is through language and song—a great teaching tool. Create a song using 7 Habits® words. Use an established song like Row, Row, Row...

Is it best to teach the 7 Habits® within the science curriculum? reading curriculum? physical education? the arts? The answer is yes, yes, yes, and yes. There is no one right curriculum for teaching habits of effective living. Rather, there are multiple rights. The 7 Habits are often introduced in isolation, one habit at a time.
