Below is a recent interview with Jean-Claude Brizard, the new CEO of Chicago Public Schools .Why did you choose to implement The Leader in Me process with Rochester City School District?“The program is part of an overall belief system, that too often when you look at education we tend to focus on the adults and what they are doing, and seldom do we look at what the children are doing. We don't...
Recently a group from FranklinCovey Education met Robert, a 5th grade Student Lighthouse Leader from Beaumont Elementary, a Lighthouse School in Michigan. Robert exemplifies the best in The Leader in Me students; he greeted us, shook our hands, made excellent eye contact with each of us, and had a smile that lit up the room! At Brentwood School of Business and Leadership, we have experienced some dramatic results in our first year with The Leader in Me. Suspensions at the elementary school have dropped 69% from a year ago, fourth- through sixth-graders are running an active junior chamber of commerce and every student is responsible for a leadership position—from lead gardener to student greeter. What we’re finding...
A 5th grade student production leader took over 200 pictures of our Leadership Day event and took it upon himself to put it into a video. He brilliantly, without any teacher direction, captured the spirit of the day as students used their strengths as public speakers, greeters, reporters, tour guides, or manned a leadership booth. Enjoy!Matt Miller, PrincipalStanton Elementary, MO
Each week our entire school gathers in the gym for an assembly-like experience. We have titled this time “Community Circle.” We sit in a circle around the MI flag, US flag, and a peace pole. We come together to share how we can carry out the 7 Habits, to create school-wide goals, and to celebrate the leaders within us. We do this through quotes, movie clips, discussions and turn and talks. ...

This weekend I had the pleasure of sitting through six soccer games! One of our teachers came to see a student play since he asked her to come EVERY week :) At the end of the game, the student walked over to see his teacher in order to show his appreciation for her coming. After addressing his teacher, the 4th grader walked over to the teacher's friend, stuck out his hand, looked him in the eye...

This is another great success story witnessed in our community of the impact The Leader in Me has on young children!
A few days ago, my husband had a man come out to do a few repairs to the house. The man was running a little behind, and my husband had to leave, so he asked our son to show him to the side of the house when he got there. The man called my husband that afternoon to tell him that h...

GOOD TO GREAT by Jim Collins: When it comes to getting started, good-to-great leaders understand three simple truths. First, if you begin with “who,” you can more easily adapt to a fast-changing world. If people get on your bus because of where they think it’s going, you'll be in trouble when you get 10 miles down the road and discover that you need to change direction because the world has ch...

One of the events the Junior Chamber hosts is a monthly breakfast that in...

However, that trend is changing as many communities are realizing the importance of the connection between youth education and future employees/citizens.As the Chamber of Commerce in Guntersville, AL we saw this potential with The Leader in Me process. Through a supportive relationship and financial contributions, the...
Before a step is taken into a school, the condition of the gardens, cleanliness, and posted messages tell what is important to the members of the school. As we started The Leader in Me journey, I was looking for a way to let everyone know about the process we were so excited about.I had inspirational words in our garden already so it occurred to me that the 7 Habits in the garden would be perf...

Recently our staff conducted their official vote for our 21st century proposal to the district. Our proposal is to become a Leader in Me school and getting an official vote is required by the teacher's union. When the votes were tallied, we had a 100% commitment! I was thrilled to have this kind of enthusiasm from the staff. Then we found out that our school is the first in the district to r...
As my school participates in The Leader in Me process, my thought was to write a poem that would:
Be a classroom reminder
Serve as a model for the seven habits at our school
Inform parents of our new vocabulary
Be a motto for our school

In Alberta, Canada we poll our students, parents, and staff every year. In May, Alberta Education released its May Accountability Pillar Survey results. Our results were the highest we have ever had!For example:
Students are taught the attitudes and behaviors that will make them successful at work when they leave school—100% agreement.
Students treat each other well at school—100% agreement.
We used this activity with our faculty, who in turn used it with the students, who took the recipe home to share with their parents. We filtered the 7 Habits from teachers to students to parents! Each of the scoops below represents a day of the week. Please take 7 scoops of each item and place them in a Ziplock sandwich bag. Using the 7 Habits all seven days of the week helps us be a successful ...
Over 30 years ago, Dr. Lezotte and his colleagues Ron Edmonds, Wilbur Brookover, and other Effective Schools researchers identified the common characteristics of successful schools--schools where all children learn. The research of these dedicated individuals refuted the notion that schools had no impact on learning and, in doing so, identified the Correlates of Effective Schools—Instructional ...
At Stuard Elementary, each of our hallways is labeled to reflect the 7 Habits . Labeling our hallways is one of the ways we use our environment to show what is important to the members of the school.Operating our internal post office is one of our LEAD roles. Letters can be “mailed” using the student’s name, hallway name, and classroom number. Students learn to compose a letter and address an e...
Our fifth graders participate annually in an inter school basketball league. Part of the way through the season, the girls’ team came to my office en mass to talk. They told me that a team they played did not follow the 7 Habits and it really upset them. Apparently there was name calling, pushing, and cheering when our team missed shots. I asked them how they handled it. They said they continue...

Like some Intermediate students in Grade 7, a boy in our school was starting to shut down, not completing work, and beginning to act out. His teacher tried many different things to help him, without much success. She decided to get him involved in a process to see if he could change and work to his potential. The teacher came to me to see if I would be able to sit and work with them to help cr...
This sign sits on the desks of numerous school administrators. It has always brought a bit of a sad smile to my face because there is so much truth behind it. The role of data in schools is mandated, and essential. Every organization needs to track progress, or lack thereof. What concerns me is the “soft skills” such as teamwork, creativity, adaptability, accountability, leadership, initiative,...
Everyone in our K-8 school has been trained in the 7 Habits—teachers, administrator, secretary, custodian, educational assistants, teacher librarian, and parent reps. Giving all school members ownership of the leadership culture has encouraged creativity and teamwork.*For example, our third and fourth grade teachers spend the first 15 minutes of each morning catching up with five students on a...
Last summer, professional development trainers in our district capitalized on the leadership talents, strengths, and potential of 46 middle and high students by leading them through 7 Habits training. The students watched FranklinCovey videos, engaged in interactive dialogue, practiced time management exercises, and enacted role-playing scenarios to help internalize the concepts. The students t...

Sammy Squirrel and Sean Covey’s other “happy kids” have given me a great way to support our school’s leadership focus during library. Using The 7 Habits of Happy Kids book, I read Chapter 1: Bored! Bored! Bored! to the first grade classes and we discussed what Be Proactive means. Then we discussed what Be Proactive means in the library. The picture below illustrates some of the answers the stu...
At Winchester Elementary, we are fairly new to The Leader in Me but you would never know it by the wealth of great ideas coming out of our students, staff, and parents. The video illustrates ideas we used in the fall to get the school year started strong. It includes ideas for the library, the literacy program, and the classrooms. We made this video to share with our parents, and our community....
As the Leadership Teacher at East Richland Elementary School, I began our Leadership Day by welcoming guests and outlining the agenda for the day. Our principals, Suzanne Hahn and Dan Cox, then shared our journey of creating a common vision. We were already a good school but our initiatives were “Random Acts of Excellence.” They were not coordinated and focused. The Leader in Me helped us to...
Imagine that you are camping and want to "have" a fire. You can do this quickly, with little effort or imagination. In fact, only one person is needed. Simply place a pressed, wrapped wood product soaked in a combustible material onto the ground. With just the flick of a lighter, you will have a friendly glow. This will last a planned amount of time, it will stay within the boundaries, and ther...
One of our social studies and math objectives for first grade is to expose children to time lines and how they are used. When I heard Stephen Covey speak at Oakland Schools a few weeks ago he said that when he asked a child what he was the leader of, the child responded that he was the leader of his life. To me that was a profound thing for a child to understand and state. My class knows they ar...
I think it is important to approach summer with a sense of balance. Begin with the end of summer in mind. How do you want to feel when summer is over? I know that I want 2 things. I want to feel refreshed, and I want to be prepared. I will spend a lot of time with my family. I will also read The 8th Habit, I will go the 7 Habits Signature Training in late July, and I will continue to read the L...
We are well on our way to accomplishing one of our district goals—to become a District of Leadership—and our Leadership Liaisons are one of the reasons for our momentum. During the 2008-2009 school year 91% of our parents attended at least one parent conference. Data notebooks and student-led conferences played a big role in achieving that number. These two strategies empower students to take ownership of their own learning. Tracking progress in their data notebooks and knowing they will personally share the progress with their parents has been a big motivator ...
Making your own weather is a metaphor Dr. Covey uses to explain that it is a choice whether to allow other people to alter your mood. My first graders and I discuss how sometimes people do things that could make us mad or angry. However, they are leaders and leaders can choose whether they get mad or angry. Just today Emma came to me and said her friend, Tanya, said she wasn't her friend anymor...
One way our second grade teachers keep parents involved in The Leader in Me process is through a Community Notebook. Each Friday, students write how they have used the habits in their daily activities to work toward their goals for the week. Over the weekend, students share the notebook with their parents. This encourages parents to look at their own lives and see how they can also use the habi...

“Hat Day” is a much-loved tradition in many schools. Let’s face it—it’s a lot of fun! As I work with schools to weave in the leadership focus we look at current traditions, like hat day. At first glance it appears that hat day does not fit with leadership. However, what if students chose a leader and wore a hat he/she would wear? What if they researched what made that leader significant? Sudde...

Most every school has special events in the evening for families to attend. Why not make it a 7 Habits event?Having a theme, or focus, will accomplish several things:
The children’s learning of the 7 Habits will be reinforced as they prepare for the big night.
The families will become familiar with the habits and able to reinforce the learning at home.

Sow a thought, reap an action. Sow an action, reap a habit. Sow a habit, reap a character. Sow a character, reap a destiny. This familiar verse begs the question: Where do the thoughts originate? How do we sow a thought in the heads of students? One significant way is through language and song—a great teaching tool. Create a song using 7 Habits® words. I recently ran across a quote by musician Pablo Casals and thought I would share. “What do we teach our children in school? We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France. When will we also teach them what they are? We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique. In all of the world there is no other child exactly lik...
